Amanda F. knows something about hard work. And Wenco has been behind her every step of the way.
At the age of 17, Amanda started out as a crew member at the Stow Grand Road location, working night shifts and closing. After leaving to have a baby, she returned as part of the opening crew. Within a year, she was asked to be a manager.
“At the time, I didn’t think I could do it,” Amanda says, “because I was a fresh mom.” But once her first child got a little older, she “made the leap” and became a shift manager. “I loved being a manager: the fast pace of it, helping people out. Multitasking sparks something in me.” Amanda laughs with enthusiasm, her energy undoubtedly spilling over to her crew members and guests.
After six years as shift manager (and moving to the Stow Kent Road location), Amanda was promoted to general manager. Since Kent Road’s February reopening after a remodel, she has enjoyed working in the new dining room as people eat and hang out at the long table in the middle of the restaurant, a favorite new feature with guests.
Amanda recognizes that having two kids and managing a store can be a challenge. “When you’re a GM, you have to worry about your store running right. But you also need to make sure you don’t neglect your family at the same time. It was hard at first, but I feel like I am starting to get the hang of balancing the two.”
Wenco’s unwavering support has helped. “I was told by my district manager and director of operations that I would never feel alone in whatever I do. They sat me down and told me that I can call them any time and that they never want to see me fail.”
The Wenco commitment to helping others extends to all their locations. Amanda recalls a time in which a shift manager at another restaurant found her house robbed just a week before Christmas. All her children’s presents were stolen. The Wenco office sent an email to all employees asking for donations of food and gifts.
“We came together and were able to give that family a Christmas,” Amanda says. “That’s the kind of thing we do for each other. I have never worked for a company who comes together and helps people like that. It’s like a family.”
